On class by Deborah Dundas is a non fiction short book about how class affects how we are perceived. Very readable.

The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. It’s a similar vibe but doesn’t take place in Appalachia. Also Barbara Kingsolver has another novel called Flight Behavior that is in a similar setting.

Not a novel, but [To the End of June](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/16691891-to-the-end-of-june?ac=1&from_search=true&qid=896bZq2qEj&rank=1) was a very up-close and personal look at the U.S. foster care system. It is well-written, following several families’ fostering journeys, and does not pull any punches.
