Well, I did it. I officially read all of Martha Wells' books. I loved all of them. What should I read next?
What I like about her style:
-
1st person protagonist with a distinct, funny voice. Sometimes dryly sarcastic, sometimes exuberant, but never generic.
-
Phenomenal world building. Leaves you with the impression the world is far bigger than what the characters experience. Setting-wise, both natural and created environments seem truly unusual yet believable.
-
Often characters meet multiple, different groups of fictional people with different cultures, practices and social norms in a single book. The cultures and individuals within them tend to make internal sense, and they don't seem to be "fantisified" versions of real world groups.
-
Relationships are detailed and nuanced enough to feel more deeply real than you usually find in genres outside of family dramas or romance
Books don't have to have all these to be a good recommendation.
