I just finished Wreckers Must Breathe by Hammond Innes and instead of any of the action or the finale, I found the following interaction to be the best part:
It’s between the protagonist and a German spy pretending to be a local.
– (Spy) I’m afraid it’ll be war.
– […] Will you be called up?
– I expect so.
– What branch?
– Navy.
– It’s better than most. Better than the trenches.
– Maybe.
And the protagonist also plays poker with the German submarine crew that takes him prisoner.
Can anyone recommend some books with this sort of interaction between enemy sides? Where they are having a conversation.
