Before I get far into this, I want to be PERFECTLY clear: scientology is an evil cult, and I have NO interest in conversion. So don't think that's what I'm asking.
But because of recent events in the news (namely related to Linkin Park), I find myself wanting to learn more about the beliefs of that evil cult. I'd love to find an in-depth, non-biased (read as: not published by the Church of Scientology and not written by Hubbard) examination of the beliefs of the Church.
All the books I'm finding seen to be mostly about the horrible stuff the church does, especially accounts of people who escaped. These are harrowing stories, but I'm specifically interested in learning about the beliefs themselves. The kind of book I'm thinking of (but can't seem to find) would probably be written by a scholar of religion. Obviously, the horrible illegal things done by the church are a HUGE, relevant part of any examination into them, so I'm not looking to find a book that ignores those things entirely. I just hope to find the book with the most complete synopsis of what the beliefs are that drive members to do what they do.
Thanks!
