I feel like lot of books I read with women protagonists lately have been cynical tone about the world around them, or some insecurity about their self esteem. (not a criticism or generalization. I think this was just pure chance on what I've happened to have encountered). That, or they're very quirky (like overfocusing on being neuro divergent. But that's more so with contemporary works I've read. [Nothing against that. I just have a disability and I get tired of being reminded of these things so much])
So id like to read literary fiction where the protagonist
-
isn't cynical about other people or the world (I like Jane Austin but I'd like something different this time. In contemporary works I read lot of women protagonists who seem annoyed by people a lot [it makes sense because they usually are mistreated] but I think it would be nice to read someone simply focused on their goals and looks to the outside world more neutral. It doesn't have to be optimistic outlook)
-
doesn't have a low-self esteem (I've read lots of books lately where they spend pages about their own place in the world. And while I enjoyed plenty of those reads, I'd like to read more about someone who is struggling with something unrelated to self-worth)
-
no focus on niche behavior traits or neuro divergent /disability. I don't want to read about someone with OCD, autism, adhd, fibro, etc. I read plenty of these books lately and am just wanting a break to de-stress from these types of struggles.
So I'd like a character who is
* focused on their goals. It could be hyperfocused to the point of derailment. That's fine too. I just want someone focused outwardly, not inwardly. That could be a good or bad thing. I don't care either way.
-
has neutral or optimistic outlook on things, regardless as to reality of that as depicted in the work
-
not a young adult. I'd like to read a woman 25+ ideally

Have you read T Kingfisher? Horror-ish but I wouldnt call them scary. Adult female leads who are fairly normal women with normal outlooks on life thrown into weird ass situations.
I recently read The Twisted Ones and The Hollow Places and they are both really good imo.

Birnam Wood by Eleanor Catton. Though the tone of the novel is pretty cynical, its main characters are not.
Maybe Ghosts by Dolly Alderton? I see it advertised as a Romcom, but I don’t agree. There is humour, and it does deal with relationships, but it’s more about the relationships the main character has with everyone in her life, not just romantic relationships. I think you would like the main character based on what you are looking for!
