I'm putting together a book of poetry for my nephew (9) and niece (7). They've come across poems by authors like A. A. Milne and Lewis Carroll in books they're reading or in those poem-a-day collections, but they don't seem particularly interested in poetry. They both love fiction, though.
The problem I'm facing is that I’ve only ever read poetry intended for adults, as an adult. I’m looking for poems that are funny, engaging, or meaningful for kids. So far, I’ve only found Messy Room by Shel Silverstein, but I’m not even sure if it’s still age-appropriate.
Do you have any recommendations? I’d especially love to hear about your favorite poems when you were around 7 or 9 years old.
I apologize if this is the wrong place to post this — suggestions for another subreddit also welcome!
