There's no shortage of books about the bygone history of US cities such as New York City, Boston, or Chicago, their architecture, their immigration history, how their bridges or buildings were constructed, the part the city played in the American Revolution or Civil War, and so on.
But are there any recently published non-fiction books out there that examine the current state of a major US city?
I don't mean a travel guide: I'm thinking about a book that tells the reader, "Look, if you want to understand [major city] — its economy, its culture, the major issues that face it — you need to read [book]."
Maybe that's too general, and maybe don't go to books for that kind of current information, but I'm nevertheless curious to know if any such books like the one I describe exist.
Thanks!
