I do NOT mean #literallyme dudes like Wolf of Wallstreet where dude does big crimes but "is just so cool you guys".
I am referring to someone who has very human flaws of selfishness and cowardlyness and DOES NOT have an arc where they overcome said cowardlyness or selfishness. More so they are coming to terms with their own selfishness/cowardlyness
And I would like it to be written in such a way that we the audience genuinely care for their fate and perhaps even root for their goals (whatever they are), potentially even at the expense of the objective harm they do to others.
Any suggestions? Only people I can think of are characters like humbert humbert or crime & punishment but this time I'm actually looking for something more narrative driven. Likely somewhere in adult genre fiction. Most likely horror.
I like Edgar Allen poe stories but they're a tad short.
Basically, I want to meet someone who is a shitty person and society would objectively be better off with dead, but I still would find myself crying if they did die.
Any examples of this?

Have you read *Yellowface* by R.F. Kuang? I think whether or not you truly *root for* the protagonist will vary from reader to reader, and it’s a thriller not horror, but it otherwise fits your criteria extremely well IMO. It’s definitely narrative driven (super interesting plot), and the protagonist is selfish, cowardly, and does not have a redemption arc—but is still compelling and very human.
