Most controversial but still interesting Southern fiction/non-fiction (Civil War)

Hi, looking for books set in Southern U. S. best would been fictional books on life there, crime stories, but also interested in both FICTION/NON FICTION controversial books by Southern authors.

So far read only Faulkner books, so interested in more recent Southern authors.

Will appreciate Your help, I found some Publishers, but as I do not know the authors its really hard to choose..
