I wish on goodreads/storygraph there was a way to look for books which are NOT like some specific books.
This one, and previously Midnight Library were hyped to me saying how life-affirming and cozy these are, lets you see life in a new way etc. etc. Midnight Library even had some themes which I like – alt destinies/lifes, second chances, self-loathing to self-love etc. But the book turned out to be preachy, trite overly simplistic and heavy-handed. There was no depth. Nora's depression is cured "just like that"
WYALFIIT Library also felt very heavy-handed and trite in its "lessons". The portrayal of magic librarian did not help either, but I let it slide as a cultural thing. Too simplistic and the solutions are just spoon fed to the character and forced into the plot.
As a contrast, In Elenor Oliphant is Fine book, the redeeming or the rescue does not appear when we would expect to appear in a rom-com book (with the romantic interest). The character still needs to painfully work through the issues in spite of the romantic fulfilment. This book is not 100% either but that was quite satisfying to see.
I am still on the lookout for a book that delivers what these 2 books promises.
