I just started East of Eden recently (very likely put it on my TBR list because of this sub) and I just finished Part 1. It's good, don't get me wrong, but my question is: are there going to be any positive portrayals of women in this book? So far it reinforces my choice to usually read female authors. I've had brief glimpses of some wives: all unhappy and unlovable characters so far, although I have sympathy for the poor 17 year old! Then, Cathy the psychopath. That's it so far. Am I going to have any female characters that I like in this book?

I felt like steinbeck sacrificed everything on the bonfire of his cane and abel metaphor to make this book.
Like that one specific part about redeeming a broken person is great but everything else around it got forgotten or undermined in service of that one metaphor. And since cain and abel are brothers, even the female characters get warped in service of that metaphor too.
