My dear friend has 2 PhDs in literature and has already read all the “important” books. She is still an avid reader but doesn’t have a favorite genre, although she generally avoids romance. She has a Kindle but prefers to hold a real book in her hands.

I just learned that she buys books rather than using the library because the pressure of returning them weighs too heavily on her. (What if she dies? What if she forgets? What if she misplaces one? Failure to return a library book is a very serious offense to her.)

But when she mentioned that she just randomly picks up the books and buys them without looking at what they’re about, all the circuits in my brain went bonkers.

Please help me gather a great selection of books for her to read rather than random stuff. I’ll be shopping the local used bookstore for your recommendations. Many thanks.

There is something about picking up books at random. It’s a challenge to you mentally. I don’t think she’s too off the mark here.

The Pilgrim’s Regress by CS Lewis is worth reading and likely to be found in charity shops.

The Bees by Laline Paul is interesting and quite different.

I enjoy Sarah Dunant’s books and they tend to touch on different historical eras.
