Books with main character who has the vibe of “Do you think he plans it all out or make it up as he goes along?” Basically someone like Captain Jack Sparrow
I like adult fantasy, sci-fi, murder mystery, no romance, nothing too dark, less than 400 pages
It’s young adult level, but Jennifer, Hecate, Macbeth, William McKinley, and Me, Elizabeth by E. L. Konigsburg fits perfectly, and is so much fun to read. Could be a nice palate cleanser.

Doesn’t really fit any of your genres, but The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out The Window And Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson fits the vibe of making it all up as he goes. It’s a really cute and fun story.

Harry Harrison’s The Stainless Steel Rat. Scifi with strong comedy overtones, Slippery Jim DiGriz is a criminal “forced” into working for the Special Corps, saving the galaxy…repeatedly.
