The Power of of One is an epic coming-of-age tale set mostly in 1940's apartheid South Africa. Starting out with a young boy being effectively orphaned and eventually sent to boarding school sets some certain expectations of a cliched tale, and truthfully some of those elements indeed are present. The novel nonetheless succeeds as great storytelling as along with the more well-worn story strokes there are surprising and original turns to the tale. It is full of vivid characters and scenes as the protagonist Peekay engages with an astonishing variety of mentors and enemies. A significant part of the story takes place in a boxing milieu, which becomes a rich background even for those not taken with boxing.

I did not finish this book. Maybe this is inappropriate, but I highly anticipated this book and was so looking forward to it, but the author included some very dirty things that were not part of the plot, like a deep fixation on breasts. That’s a nope for me. I wanted the story, not the extra that he included.
