Going through my catalogue I realize I haven't read much contemporary novels from 1940-ish and after since I breeze through fantasy and sci-fi stories. I do love classics since I read Jane Austen, Charles Dicken, Tale of Genji, etc. But I haven't diversify much in the modern fields.
I only know Ernest Hemmingway, Alice Munro, and Cormac Mc Carthy. I'm interest in any genre and themes.

John Steinbeck
*The Name of the Rose* by Umberto Eco. If you like this, follow it up with *Foucault’s Pendulum* by the same author.
*A Prayer for Owen Mean* by John Irving
And since you like SciFi, *A Canticle for Leibowitz* by Walter Miller.
