some favorite authors i've read in the last few years have been alexander chee, kristen arnett, julia drake, juliet grames, lidia yuknavitch, clarice lispector, carol wasserman, emma cline (though i really can't do horror/gore and read the girls accidentally, gave me intrusive thoughts for weeks after). i love memoirs and journals, but i am looking for more fiction recs. what has been your favorite novel or short story collection about the messiness of being human, with MCs who may lack self awareness but offer relatable introspection still? open to more historical fiction after reading juliet grames but tend to prefer stuff set within the last century. bonus points if it's queer and/or really beautiful, lyrical prose. kind of over edgy-sad-angry YA MCs. my TBR already includes authors like haruki murakami, hanya yanagihara, dostoevsky, kafka, robert goolrick, susan sontag.
