I’m looking for a really sad doomed love story full of yearning that makes you feel so sad and makes your chest hurt. I love everything Ishiguro has written, especially Never Let Me Go, but I can only reread it so many times and I’m looking for something that evokes similar feelings.

The End of Loneliness
In high school I read a collection of traditional folkloric love stories, I think it was “First Love Stories” by Diane Wolkstein. It had a middle eastern story called Majnun and Layla that was the saddest thing I ever read, I cried all over that book and probably ruined it.
“Like Water for Chocolate” by Laura Esquivel is another I would recommend in that vein.
And finally the classic, “The Sorrows of Young Werther” by Johannes Goethe. I personally like the translation that exists under the title “The Sorrows of Werter” because it was the first English translation and so the language is period correct, but there are many others available.
