While it goes without saying that the psychoanalytic works of figures such as Freud & Jung aren’t warmly received in contemporary academia, whether it be the works of classic filmmakers such as Bergman & Hitchcock, certain portions of the humanities (ex. Joseph Campbell, Herbert Marcuse, etc.), or even just art in general, the scope of each figures’s influence and their respective ideas has long exceeded that of clinical psychology as a concentrated field. While this does not retroactively legitimize their ideas either outside or within academia, I’d reckon that it warrants a more meaningful engagement with their most famous theories & texts, or at least more than a mere dismissal.

Are there any psychologists and/or texts which directly evaluate/rebut the theories of Freud & Jung, while proposing alternative explanations to psychological phenomena by utilizing contemporary research and/or alternative explanations?
