Hello,
last time I asked about different kinds of "-punks" and I loved the recommendations. For the purpose of character research aside from general interest, I wanted to read further into a story about Japanese mythology in a cyberpunk or sci-fi setting. My research so far has shown me there isn't that much in that regard. As I have a perfect example which sadly isn't really a long story I am hoping there is more like this.
One example that is not a long story but fits it perfectly is Kamigawa Neon Dynasty from Magic the gathering. (THIS is what I am looking for in another world)
Another less cyberpunk example, that still involves high-tech and basically sci-fi would be white fox (Kitsune inspiration) and Shang-shi in Agents of atlas from Marvel comics. Shadowrun also has something like that but maybe you can recommend a specific Shadowrun book that incorporates that.
As there are similarities between Asian mythologies it is ok if it's not only Japanese. I would also like actual magic present in this world. Preferably not some kind of lower tier fantasy where there is magical "influences" and "half bloods" that are bassically still human, etc. (Sorry for the weird description of what I dont want, but this is what I found in my research so far the most)
Bonus points: not necessary but super specifically what I am looking for.
- A nature spirit living in a high tech world
- Presence and relevance of a "world tree/tree of life" a motiv found in many mythologies around the world even though the nordic are probably most known for it.
- Kitsune/ (not yet) nine tailed fox as a character or Race
- Studio ghibli vibes
Thank you soo much in advance if you know something that fits to this. I feel it has to exist but my search so far resulted in not much. Mainly because I think my search engine knows I play magic and whenever cyberpunk and mythology are names it auto results it into kamigawa neon dynasty. Yes its fitting but not a Story I havent heard. Technically other kinds of media would be fine as well but I am not sure if thats alllowed here and I would prefer books.
PS: When I talk about character research I want to make clear I am not a writer. I plan to play a character in a pen and paper rpg.
