Hi! Looking for a book where the main character is a reluctant messiah figure for a religious group. I recently finished listening to The Magnus Archives and I was fascinated by the character of Agnes Montague so I’m looking for stories from that type of perspective. Maybe the character slowly realizes that the cult they’re part of is all a lie. Or maybe it’s real but they feel suffocated by their role and so-called destiny. Or maybe both.

Dune comes to mind if you haven’t read that one yet.
Warbreaker is a great fantasy
Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, is mostly comedy
I think you should try Cat’s Cradle, but it doesn’t technically fit your request
God’s Other Son, but its about a crazy guy, not a reluctant one
Richard Bach’s **Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah**
The story is told from a person who encounters the self-described messiah, though.
