I do enjoy reading the occasional horror book, but I'm not a huge fan of too much violence or gore as the main horror element.
I like more subtle horrors – things that go bump in the night, weird stuff happening, people around the protagonist(s) acting weird, etc. – that start out slow and get worse / more intense as the story progresses, books with a dark, eerie atmosphere that aren't too over the top, but still creepy. Doesn't necessarily have to be supernatural, though I don't mind ghosts, magic, even actual monsters or demons being involved, I'll take it.
Books I've enjoyed in the past:
– Home Before Dark (this one's pretty close to what I'm looking for, though it doesn't have to be a haunted house story)
– How To Sell A Haunted House (I liked the more subtle haunted house aspect of this one, though it got a bit too crazy for my liking)
– The Whistling (had a great atmosphere / vibe, though could've been a lot creepier)
– The Lighthouse Witches (not exactly horror, but I did enjoy the sometimes eerie vibe of this one)
