Looking for non-fantasy/sci-fi books where the main character has been afflicted either by their genetics or socioeconomic background and they either fight for a “normal/comfortable” life, or accept their fate and move on with their life.
Bonus points for having their parents be active in the story, whether that is a good or bad thing for the main character. The parents can be unlikeable, likable, unredeemable and/or redeemable.
