Hello! I'm an art student hoping to make a picture book for kids for my final project. Obviously, this means checking out as many picture books as I can before I decide to do one, so I thought I should ask for suggestions as I'm planning on buying a whole bunch of them on Amazon.
Are there any picture books you, as an adult, love flipping through because you find yourself so charmed by the art? A good story is a plus, but even if the story is mediocre, you still adore the illustrations!
Extra Yarn and Sam and Dave Dig a Hole are good examples for me. Jon Klassen is one of my favorite artists. I love his illustrations so much, they're so fun and endearing.

The Hungry Hen by Richard Waring and illustrations by Caroline Jayne Church was a picture book I had as a kid, got rid of, but couple years back scoured the Internet to get myself a copy of it, despite being way over the age for it. The drawings are so adorable and I think also play a large part in telling the story. The final drawing of the hen smiling, to me, is still one of the funniest illustrations I’ve seen, even though it’s so simple.
I can’t wait to get my little nephew the Pinkerton books by Steven Kellogg, or anything by Maurice Sendak.
I love Barbara Cooney’s books a lot too, especially Miss Rumphius
It’s there a library near you? Go to the children’s section and start looking at picture books.
We really like The Big Bath House by Kyo Maclear, the Brambley Hedge books by Jill Barklem, Fox’s Dream by Tejima, Peepo! (Or Peekaboo! If you’re in the States) by Janet and Allen Ahlberg, I Love Guinea Pigs illustrated by Anita Jeram and Pokko and the Drum by Matthew Forsythe.
[The Bear and the Piano](https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/ce040cad-73ec-412d-9ef0-3036dfdce13c) by David Litchfield
Goodnight Gorilla by Peggy Rathmann has my favorite illustrations of all my 2 year old’s books – I think the way she draws animals is so cute.
The Lion and the Bird by Marianne Dubuc
David Weisner books
Zen Shorts by Jon Muth
Hondo and Fabian by Peter McCarty
I was going to suggest Jon Klassen but I see he’s at the bottom of your post!
