I (24F) have had trouble finding books that I actually enjoy reading for a long time and feel that I’ve now figured out what I’m generally looking for in a book and wanted to ask for recommendations of books similar! My favorite books are Norwegian Wood by Murakami, Dharma Bums by Kerouac and Slow Days, Fast Company by Eve Babitz. What I think these all have in common is a first person sprawling narrative that is more about the reader’s relationship to the narrator, their inner monologue and their personal outlook on life and events rather than being plot driven, if that makes sense? I’ll also note that all three books stay away from flowery writing and are written very to the point and matter of factly. I have started On the Road by Kerouac a few times and am still waiting for it to truly catch my attention, which I think at some point it will. I am currently reading To the Lighthouse by Woolf but I find her writing to be a little difficult for me to connect to. Some other books on my reading list are Bonjour Tristesse by Françoise Sagan, The Secret History by Donna Tartt and Eve’s Hollywood by Babitz. Thank you!
