I am looking for some books that feel old-school whimsical like The Hobbit. I loved Tolkien's writing, and have read the LOTR trilogy, but it doesn't have the same sort of lightness to it. I would like to read something lovely and whimsical that feels like adventures and the Shire and Rivendell and has quality character development and diversity, and also please NO romance. I am not interested in romance whatsoever.
I would be open to reading YA and general audience books, again, so long as it's not romance/romantic interest-centered. Bonus points for queerness, though, and diversity. We could always use more of that in our literary content (ad infinitum).
I would prefer something whimsical and fantastical in subject matter, but I would also be open to something that is not explicitly adventure or fantasy in genre, but bends into those with other influences.
Thank you ahead of time! I look forward to your suggestions.
