I'm looking for suggested readings that deal with similar territory covered by Calvino in "Why Read the Classics"

I especially like Calvino's personal approach to the argument he makes. I also like that he has an international perspective and is not simply focused on what's taught in English classes. I'm aware that there are very longstanding debates in literary studies about about the politics of canon formation and the historical lack of diversity in publishing. These questions are are definitely relevant here, and I'd be interested in essays that examine this from an accessible point-of-view. I seem to recall an article from a literary journal or website published a few year ago that was arguing that frequent re-issues of classic works by canonical authors were kind of sucking up too much air not allowing new writers to receive the attention and readership they deserve. If someone recalls the same article, please remind me of the title and author.
