Confronting autobiography?

I have been on a real binge lately for autobiographies, but I've hit a bit of a cold streak where they have all felt self-indulgent and risk-free.

Can anyone recommend a take-no-prisoners autobiography by an author whose life has been fraught with devastating setbacks?
