I have no words. What an intense, beautiful novel it was. I legit feel like crying, this story really touched me. God, I love McMurphy, Bromden and all the others. God, I hate Ratched with a passion. They were all suffering at her clutches until McMurphy came in and caused chaos. They were finally discovering life again. They were becoming happy again. But I had a feeling it just wouldn't end well at all. I like how McMurphy wasn't portrayed as some hero but a flawed human being who still had compassion inside him. It just made him even more likeable to me. Bromden had good character development, from a scared sheep to an emboldened man. I really loved Billy and Cheswick… but they both died in awful ways, not free and still slaves to the System. The writing style is quite endearing: simplistic yet insightful, emotional and raw at times. McMurphy deserved so much better… I was so shocked to read that he was forced to get lobotomy by Ratched, and then just dying as well. This is just horrible. To think that this was really how human beings were treated for so long. Don't ever allow yourself to be controlled. Don't ever let somebody else choose what's good for you. Live your life to the fullest, the way you want to live it. Do not let the System thrive over your life. Fight, always, desperately if you have to. Even if it's a losing battle. Just fight. Because there will be people to remember your struggle. That's what I got from this book.
I'll definitely look for a lighter read next. This book was just so depressing and heavy, but I'm still very glad that I've read it. To those who've read it as well, your thoughts?
