I'm on a horror kick right now, and I love a good haunted house story. I also love stories in general that are centered around a foreboding, creepy house, even if the creepy thing isn't necessarily ghosts.
I've read and enjoyed:
- We Used to Live Here by Marcus Kliewer
- Coraline by Neil Gaiman
- Carmilla by Sheridan le Fanu
- Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier (I know this isn't strictly horror, but it has a very eerie, Gothic feel and a sense of dread in some places that makes me associate it with this kind of book)
- Delicious Monsters by Liselle Sambury
- The Writing Retreat by Julia Bartz
On the movie and TV side of things, I also love Crimson Peak, The Addams Family, Monster House, The Shining, Housebound, and Sunset Boulevard (again, not strictly horror, but the old, decrepit mansion and the overall set design does SO much heavy lifting in that movie).
Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

If you’ve only seen the movie of {{ The Shining }} and not read the book, I highly recommend the book. Very different from the movie; way better imo.
The Haunting of Hill House
White is for Witching
She is a Haunting
*The Red Tree* by Caitlin R. Kiernan
a tough read, but “House of Leaves”.
you absolutely need a paper copy though, it won’t really work on an e-reader.
Mexican Gothic
You could try Man, Fuck This House by Brian Asman.
“Down a Dark Hall” by Lois Duncan is YA, but it’s very much in the same vein as The Haunting of Hill House or Rebecca, albeit with a different twist.
“The Thief of Always” by Clive Barker
“The House on the Borderland” by William Hope Hodgson
“The Woman in Black” by Susan Hill
We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson
The September House by Carissa Orlando
A Good House for Children by Kate Collins
