I’m looking for suggestions for books that are somewhat uplifting and heartwarming, to help me get through the next few weeks of medical treatments that might be hard on my body (IVF). I am off from work for these few weeks, and will be spending lots of time alone at home. It will be a great time for some reading, and I’m hoping to find something inspiring and hopeful to keep me good spirits while also distracting me from what I’m going through.
Last summer, I read Tom Lake by Ann Patchett, and absolutely loved getting lost in the world of the story. I started reading some of Patchett’s other work (I’m currently reading The Magician’s Assistant), and while I very much enjoy her writing, Tom Lake felt much different than her other work, because it didn’t have too much of an ‘edge’ to it. The other stories I’ve read by her have more serious themes of loss and grief, which I don’t think is the best thing for me right now.
Maybe I’m looking for comfort— the book equivalent of how I feel when I watch Gilmore Girls. Heartwarming and hopeful, but also smart and maybe even witty.
Does this sound like any books or series you’ve read?
