I want to write a story set in California (greater L.A. area) in the late 1800s, but definitely after the admission to the union. To get a feeling of life there I’m looking for (authentic, well-researched) novels or popular science history books that look at life in California during that time or during the Conquest of California. Very interested in any religious themes/conflicts, so bonus points for that!
Thanks in advance!

Might not be exactly what you are looking for but the sisters brothers by Patrick dewitt is fantastic
“Frog Music” by Emma Donoghue is set in San Francisco in 1876, and focuses on immigrants associated with seedy music halls. It’s basically a love-letter to San Fransisco history. So not quite what you need. But it might be helpful in terms of tech, clothes, and so on.
