I’m going through a divorce and I’m just in a shitty depressive hole. I feel like I read some of everything but while looking through my kindle library, I noticed that almost everything I have is depressing or at least feels depressing right now. Looking for feel-good book recommendations. What books made you laugh out loud? What books had you smiling throughout? What books had you rooting for the characters to get their happy ending? Any and all suggestions are deeply appreciated. Reading feels like my only escape right now.

    1. Miriam Margolyes’ Autobiography This much is true.

Be warned: hilarious and absolutely filthy.

    2. Direct-Hotel3586 on

The Invisible life of Addie Larue by V E Schwabb

      Wayward by Emelia Hart

these are both more escapism but I absolutely loved them both

    3. From personal experience, I just recommend that you reread your favorites, or listen to them on audiobooks so it’s not just you in a quiet house/apartment.

Off the top of my head, some things I read or reread during the first year:

      * Mists of Avalon (nb that some people don’t want to read this because the author was a monster. It’s a nostalgic read for me and I can separate that from the reality of who wrote it, but YMMV)
      * Priory of the Orange Tree
      * all of Seanan McGuire’s Every Heart a Doorway series
      * The Thessaly series by Jo Walton
      * Lifelode, by Jo Walton. Lovely little cottagecore read about how life and relationships can change and you can change with them.
      * Never Let me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro

    4. John Green’s The Anthropocene Reviewed is a series of essays about the human-touched world. They’re fun, nostalgic, sad, uplifting, and almost always hopeful. I can’t recommend it enough.

    5. My happy place books:

      Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand

      A Man Called Ove

      The Rosie Project

      Pride & Prejudice

      Harry Potter

      A Confederacy of Dunces

      Sherlock Holmes

When I’m sad but also feeling nostalgic:

      Anne of Green Gables

      Charlotte’s Web

Mrs. Frisby & the Rats of Nimh
