Hi! My mom is an avid reader and loves time pieces that really focus (1) on the way people used to live in said times and (2) the development of relationships between people (not romantic per se, but can be). I reckon she's read quite a bunch of them, so obscure gems are especially welcome. Last thing is that my mom's quite wise/smart, so the book should have a certain depth of themes and thought.

Has she read any of the Brontë sisters?

Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights are good.

I just finished and loved the audiobook “Call Your Daughter Home” by Dep Spera. Set in the 1920’s South Carolina and the lives of 3 amazing women [and their families] intersect. She’ll have a hard time deciding which of the characters she loves and respects the most.

It’s dark in places but not terribly so. No sex, romance, or foul language.

{{North Woods by Daniel Mason}} is all that – historical over a long period of time, a string of related characters (some family, some not), and an challenging yet enjoyable read for its prose and poetry.

I really love Lisa See books. The ones that seem the most fitting for what you’re looking for would be Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, Island of Sea Women, a 2 book series (Shanghai Girls and Dreams of Joy). Pretty much all of her books are great and the relationships mainly focuses on friendships among women. These books are also about Chinese women with the exception of Island of Sea Women which is set in Jeju Island in Korea.

      Her books are historical fiction.
