Hi!! I am on an Ishiguro streak, but I don't want to run out of his books too quickly, so I need alternative authors.
If this helps, the reason I like Ishiguro is because his writing is actually quite direct and simple, but the ideas/messages/observations are fascinating. Also, because he actually has plots in his books and there is enough suspense to keep you turning the page (e.g. in The Remains of the Day, I was really curious about what was up with Lord Darlington). My big thing is I hate pretentious literary fiction. I just cannot stand it, when it's so obsessed with its own language, so I want authors who don't do that.

Hmm, you might like these:
* Of Tales and Enigmas by Minsoo Kang. A book of short stories with direct and simple writing, but interesting ideas.
* The short fiction of Ted Chiang. Also short stories with direct and simple writing but interesting ideas. I recommend either of this author’s anthologies, Exhalation and Stories of Your Life and Others
* The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood. Nothing else by this author is similar.
* Kindred by Octavia E. Butler. The characters are written so well, they *feel* alive.
