Looking for a book about an average person stuck in the end times

I am looking for a book about some average Joe trying to survive the end times. I am not very worried about genre – it could be a sci fi story about a satellite inhabitant whois living through an alien attack leading to the end of humanity, or a fantasy where a peasant is facing the return of an long forgotten horror awakened by cultists. I just want the focus to mainly be on the decline itself, rather than it being post-facto: the signs of what's to come, people working to futilely prevent it, the grand finale.
