My husband (M,25) wants to read his first book since he was a kid. He said he wants a book like Hatchet by Gary Paulson. He wants the book to be fiction and have some sort of survival element. He doesn’t want any sci-fi. Preferably the book would be short and easy to read. Please give me suggestions!

Has he tried audiobooks?
If he hasn’t read in a long time and wants to get back into it maybe he should read Hatchet again. When I get in a reading slump I often read old favorites because they’re comforting and predictable.
For books with a survival element I would recommend “Into Thin Air” or “Into the Wild” both by Jon Krakauer or “The Wager” by David Grann. These are all non-fiction books about people struggling to survive after disaster happens.
If he ever does dare to branch out to something more scifi-ish then The Hunger Games or The Martian would be safe bets
Maybe look into the Peter Ash series by Nick Petrie?? Not survivalist focused but has some elements and is easy to read.
