In the past couple weeks we have ordered around 15-20 new books from Amazon and I would say at least 30% have arrived damaged. It appears to be a result of them being sent in those cheap flimsy bubble mailers, so whenever the mail carriers throw the packages around you end up with dented spines and creased dust jackets on hardcovers, and similar dents and tears on paperbacks.

Prior to about 6 months ago almost all books from Amazon came in boxes, with packing materials ensuring they didn't move around at all, so they would arrive in mint condition and didn't need to be returned.

They do have an easy returns policy but it is just annoying waiting for something to arrive only to find it damaged, especially considering the extremely high rate of damaged products.

We have started going to Barnes and Noble to buy there instead, but often want older or less popular books that aren't available there. I was wondering if there are any "Amazon alternative" websites, that have a large selection of books and editions, fast shipping with easy returns, and most importantly: package the books properly (such as in a box with packing materials preventing them from moving around in it). Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Edit: We tried the Barnes and Noble website. The membership is $25/year and provides the same benefit as Amazon Prime (free 2 day shipping). The book arrived after 2 days in a cardboard mailer (the one that folds around the book and prevents it from being dented, with no additional plastic packaging) and in mint condition. So I recommend trying Barnes and Noble. We only ordered 1 thing to test it but will try it for our next few purchases and see if it's consistent.
