I'm looking for books that essentially combine historical biography with travel writing, where the author follows in the person's footsteps, researching their life while also documenting their own travels throughout the book. One example is The Trigger by Tim Butcher where he follows in Gavrilo Princip's footsteps from his home village through to Sarajevo and his grave, mostly hiking his way. Another is The Man Who Married a Mountain by Rosemary Bailey where she travels around the Pyrenees documenting locations that a 19th century climber visited and lived.

Usually these kind of books are written by journalists or at least non-academic historians, but I find them more interesting to read than the usual biographies and they serve as a nice travel guide for the area.
