I’m looking for recommendations where you’ve read a horror novel and it gave you so much more than you expected.

I agree that a slasher, haunting or the like is a good fun time – but I find that within the horror genre I don’t so often come across a novel that leaves me with something,

Be it a new idea, a strong connection to the characters, looking at something with a new perspective, the discourse of human nature or a fleshed out character development that helps us understand the in’s and out of the decisions we make out of fear, love, greed etc etc

It doesn’t have to be literary fiction, as a matter of fact, I don’t remember if I’ve ever read a literary horror that I’ve enjoyed, maybe a recommendation that strikes a balance between both?

Either ways I’m open to all suggestions. It can be horror adjacent as well – as long as it still falls under this genre.
