If you want a tear-jerker that has romance but isn’t specifically a romance, read A Little Life.

Just a heads up, romance books by definition have a happily ever after. Books that have romance but without a HEA are generally referred to a women’s fiction or women’s literature (the terms seem pretty dated and problematic but I don’t make the rules) in case you’re searching for this type of book.
