Suggest me a great horror book not written by King because, to put it bluntly, I just can't stand the way he writes. Too long winded and overly fixated on things that don't matter, the way his characters talk and interact feels weird (they all behave like "Stephen King" characters), and he has that grating, manic internal monologuing that goes something like:
Off to the tippy top of the tower I go. Yes-yes, the tippity toppiest, to put the thing on top of the thing, and pop-pop-pop my way back down.
I just find it exhausting to read. Any suggestions?

*The Books of Blood* by Clive Barker
Dan Simmons wrote some Kingesque books early in his career that might be better than 90% of King’s own books. Namely, *Summer of Night* and *Carrion Comfort*.
I love Shirley Jackson’s books, maybe you’d enjoy The Haunting of Hill House?
