Looking for books with a lot of “potential” energy or tension, where everything is about to descend into chaos.

Basically just where there’s a very precarious situation. It might seem stable at first, but the more the story develops the more it becomes clear that everything is barely held together. Looking for lots of plotting and scheming, and uncertain alliances that might not hold up.

Game of Thrones fits this, but I need the series to be finished one way or another before I commit to another re-read. I’m open to anything, fiction, sci fi, fantasy.
