My mom loves murder mysteries but only certain kinds. She likes ones where there is small town and community intrigue, deep secrets lying underneath a polite exterior, interesting and quirky characters, lots of sense of place and rich descriptions. Ideally with some humor. Can be modern or historical.
Absolutely no graphic violence or gore. Ideally no themes that are too heavy.
Ones she has enjoyed in the past: Agatha Christie, Louise Penny, P.D. James,
Francine Mathews Nantucket mysteries, Stephanie Barron Jane Austen mysteries, L.R. Wright, Kate Saunders, Donna Leon (although I think hers got a bit too gritty at times)
