I've read almost everything by Ryu Murakami. His themes often cover the dark or seedy underbelly of Japanese city life, focusing on things like night life, crime, sex, drugs, often (but not always) in the lives of the working class.

I'd love to explore some Korean fiction authors who cover similar themes, preferably based in and around Seoul or Busan.

Any recommendations would be appreciated, thanks!

Hwang Sok-yong – Known for his socially conscious writing, Hwang Sok-yong’s “The Old Garden” and “Familiar Things” provide deep dives into the struggles and darker aspects of Korean society.
