I read this interesting article by writer Ewan Morrison (https://quillette.com/2024/05/23/why-we-must-walk-away-from-omelas-the-problem-with-utopias-authoritarianism-science-fiction/). He writes that all utopias in fiction are bland.
I'm not sure I agree. The Federation in Star Trek is a perfectly colourful utopia. But is it even a utopia? It's not perfect but it's a lot better than the society we have today.
Any thoughts? Is all utopian fiction bland? Is a utopian inherently devoid of dramatic potential?
