I’ve just finished reading this book and there’s a lot going on in my mind right now. It's such a stark portrayal of the systemic and often invisible struggles that women face daily. On one hand, I feel frustrated realizing that I, like Kim Ji-young and other women, have to go through so many similar things. Some parts were so suffocating that I had to close the book and take a breath.

It's not that Kim Ji-young and the women around her have never spoken up, but speaking out doesn't change anything; it even makes things worse. That shouldn’t be the norm. But unfortunately, it still is.

And it’s not entirely true that Kim Ji-young’s life was filled only with bad men. Her father wasn’t irresponsible towards his family and he loved his children. Her second boyfriend sincerely hoped she would get a good job and live a good life. Her current husband is also a considerate man who loves his wife; after arguments, he always tries to have a kind conversation to understand her better. However, that still wasn't enough to erase all the difficulties related to gender discrimination that she faced. Kim Ji-young still had to sacrifice her time, health, and the job she loved. She even had to endure the loss of her dignity when others cruelly labeled her as a "parasite.”

On the other hand, I’m truly grateful that I didn’t miss out on such a beautifully written book. I love stories about ordinary people, where the author acknowledges all their struggles and strengths. At first glance, Kim Ji-young appears as an average woman with no remarkable achievements in life, just someone you might encounter anywhere in society. But have we ever put ourselves in their shoes to address exactly what limits their choices, what stops them from living the life they desire? Kim Ji-young was hardworking and wholeheartedly serious about every decision she makes. People like her deserve more support and appreciation.
