    Hello,
I am looking for suggestions for chapter books to read to my 5.5 and 3 yo sons. They both love books and have fairly advanced vocabulary and understanding for their age. We read every night since they were babies but have run into a bit of a summer slump. 5 year old is ready for longer and more advanced chapter books (he’s getting bored with picture books) but the 3 year old can’t quite sit through them. We do separate reading at times but most nights we read together. I’m looking for books that are moving towards chapter books, have some illustrations (doesn’t have to be every page) and will engage them both so we can keep the read-alouds alive!

5 loves adventures, super heroes, dragons, magic, fairy tales, and kids going on adventures. He’s read the magic tree house, my father’s dragon, The Ratso Brothers, and A Tale of Despereaux (which he loves). Also enjoyed the Boxcar children we have as an audiobook. He generally does not do great with too much dramatic tension but has gotten more adventurous.

3 sits through some long books for his age as long as there is an illustration. He has an impressive vocabulary. He loves Mercy Watson and interestingly loves scary stories (his favorite book is the Tailypo story). He will definitely be my Goosebumps fan in the future. If there is a picture, he will sit and listen.

We’ve tried Charlotte’s Web with the older one 6 months ago but he didn’t like the beginning, also tried Catwings but he wasn’t too engaged.

    Thanks for your help!
