Hey! I'm a stereotypical fantasy reader (28M). I must admit, there is just something both nostalgic and just plain fun in fantasy and (although slightly less) science fiction that draws me in and I'm not apologising for liking these genres above all others.
That being said I want to branch out.
Few things that I liked to guide your recommendations:
-
I really enjoyed the Ocean 11 esque assembling of the crew and heist planning that I found in Brandon Sanderson's mistborn.
-
I really enjoyed the semi-historic setting that inspired me to constantly look for what is true history and what is made up of Sapkowski's Husitic trylogy.
-
I absolutely loved the murder mystery themes of the Caves of Steel of Isaac Asimov and Richard Morgan's Altered Carbon
-
I loved the philosophical, psychological and political drug fueled ramblings of Frank Herbert in dune.
-
Good romance story. Like Geralt and Yennefer in the witcher. Painfull. Realistic. Cool.
And few things I really didn't like
-
Mary Sue / Gary Stue esque OP children as in Orson Scott Card's Pathfinder
-
Weird fixation on bloodlines and genetics (especially if perceived as something legitimetely good. I don't mind if it's clearly a bad thing disuised as a good thing like in Dune or the Witcher) like in Sanderson's Mistborn.
-
Stories that can't get to their fucking point. Like "Ja inkwizytor" . I mean, the premise being this good we deserve the conclusion (I'm not aware of this series translation into english and for a good reason. It has amazing premise, but just drags on forever and completely loses it's focus).
-
Weird fixation on love triangles. I mean as I said. I like a good ship as much as any fella next to me. But when we aproach 50% of the story being MC pondering and love interests being jealous of each other, it just gets boring. Like in Sarah J. Mass Throne of glass.
Damn. This turned out to be longer than it needed. Anyways. Thanks fo all recommendations ! Cheers!

Have a look at Neal Stephenson’s Baroque Cycle series.
