Does such a thing exist? I like the idea of cowboys and outlaws and a lot of horses and exploring a new and dangerous land and having a setting mainly full of small settlements and a whole lot of wilderness. But also I don’t love that the original western genre is rooted in the idea that the American West is a land for white men to conquer and take from the Indigenous peoples who have always lived there.

Do there exist books that subvert the worse tropes of the genre but still feel like a western?

Bonus points if there are Indigenous people in it and they get to do cool shit and don’t have to be either victims or aggressors. Mega bonus points if women get to be cowboys and the book plays with gender roles and expectations in a fun way. Mega mega bonus points if there are queer people in it.

Super down for it to be a western/sci fi genre mash up as well!
