‘The Dark Side of Skin’ by Jeferson Tenório and ‘The Brown Kid’ by Ziraldo Alves Pinto
have been removed and banned from local school bookshelves. Pintos book is banned in Minas Gerais and Tenórios book is banned in 3 states. This is part of a larger ‘culture war’ against race, gender & LGTBQ related books.
Tenório wrote about his experience with racism and police brutality in Brazil that he describes as “cordial racism”. Pinto wrote satirically about Brazils past dictatorship.
Whenever a book gets banned a piece of someones story is removed with it.
